The WannaCry ransomware epidemic hit users on Windows like wildfire, but what can it do on a Linux system running wine? Let’s find out. (Test OS: Ubuntu 16.04.02 LTS 64 bit, Xenial Xerus)
Hint: Maybe Linux isn’t the totally immune God OS without security issues.. (Rant included)

May 10, 2020For all the people complaining that security on Linux isn't the same as other applications being exploited on Linux, please get some context. When I say Linux in this video, I am talking about the "Linux Environment" and not just the kernel. The point is, security is a concern regardless of OS. Just the Linux Kernel may be more secure, but then again so is a doormat. The point is, how many Linux websites can run on just the kernel? None.
I bet the old Nokia phones were secure, but would you trade it for your smartphone? Security is easy when there is really nothing much to protect. It isn't fair to compare the raw Linux Kernel with a fully functional Windows system.

May 10, 2020After looking at the number of dislikes and comments, remember guys: try to find a partner that cares about you as much as Linux fans do their precious operating system.
Or maybe not. That's probably reaching yandere territory.

May 10, 2020Linux being immune to malware is ofc nonsense, but imagine the majority of webservers running Windows…
No system is inherently secure, but Linux is pretty much the best weve got when it comes to that.
Allso, yep, Wine runs Windows programs, and this includes malware. Your OS doesent protect you from stupidity.
Dont get me wrong, pointing out that "immunity to malware on Linux" just isnt true, is a good thing, alas this
sounds an awful lot like "this isnt any better than Windows" which in turn allso just isnt true.

May 10, 2020Well.. If someone use wine to run foreign shit and keep Z: drive mounted ( it defaults to be symlink to / ) they deserve it ))
Hotfix: $ rm -rf ~/.wine/dosdevices/z*

May 10, 2020Chief, what your showing is actual but most Linux is not pre-installed with wine. I have been using ubuntu for more 10 years and never have to worry about virus or malware. I just dont really care of installing anti-virus on Linux box, never once i am infected on my workstation, for 10 years!! while changing and upgrading to different ubuntu version. I agree vulnerabilities are there but Microsoft and apple still in the top 5 in vulnerabilities CVS scoring ( high CVS score meaning they can remotely execute) . But for malware and virus that actually native to Linux, it is so small which the reason my organisation all currently on ubuntu ( 530 desktops, saving hundreds of thousand USD on AV or endpoint protection) and servers too. Ask Microsoft or Apple to give you live patch on a servers /desktop, forget it :).

May 10, 2020I wish all these people hollering "move to Linux" would just sthu. The last thing we need is more people using Linux and increasing the profitability of writing malware for the Linux desktop.

May 10, 2020backing up the system before with timeshift is better. or with aomei backupper.
they will restore your pc in case.
of course the backup must be on another medium! otherwise maybe she will have suffered.
Despite that I do not know the damage with respect to Linux, I only see this in order to avoid reinstalling everything.
it is recommended to analyze before any file to execute with wine in case of doubts of this one.

May 10, 2020Yeah so Manu exploits that you show a malware (mirai) who uses the default login credentials to infect unprotected devices. Linux is very different to windows, even if you get a malware for some exploit it probably will only affect a part of the system, even if it gaina root access in a well protected system it won't do any harm, there are tools like selinux, apparmor to limit what programs can do, you can disable the root account, mount partitions read only, disable executables with fstab, that's just some things we can do to increase security in linux, if linux had any exploits to take over the system internet would be down right now because all servers run linux hackers and ha

May 10, 2020We don't think Linux is "immune" but we know it is safer. This video is easily pulverized by the fact that servers use Linux not Windows because they know it's safer

May 10, 2020Hacked site is not an issue with Linux. Saying it is like Blaming Toyota for a Car accident that happened because of car driver's fault not manufacturer's. Those Sys admins who worry about Linux Security worry about services and software that may expose vulnerability such as SSH. It is rarely a kernel security issue.

May 10, 2020That's not a vunreability with the system , and that's very ignorant of you to say.
This is the equivalent of saying , chrome has a bug which let's you take control the home directory.
Is that the fault of Linux ? Or the fault of chrome…
This isn't a bug , but the point is you should only be using wine for things you absolutely cannot find a replacement for on Linux.
Then again most sys admins are just underqualified script kiddies…

May 10, 2020LOL Best thing for linux users… Just use Virtualbox with Windows 10 installed if you seriously want to run window programs… if you do get malware it won't affect your linux machine in anyway… 50 years later and you still don't need an anti virus on linux as long as you don't use wine on the host machine.

May 10, 2020dare exploit OpenBSD! Linux is much more complicated and who the hell on this earth runs vulnerable exes on linux. I always prefer scripts and run after carefully reading them out myself. So basically your bias towards Torvalds sucks. Linux is not for script kiddie.

May 10, 2020I run a LAN file server on Linux but that does not mean it is invincible to Windows malware. Whenever someone logs into it on Windows there is a huge vulnerability to any ransomware or the like to destroy everything on there. Thankfully I have the server password protected, so I just tell people to not set Windows to remember the password and to logout as soon as they are done transferring files.

May 10, 2020Actually Windows Server is ran on a great many web servers. Linux can be RE/RSE but again that is more on the admin / management end. Hacking web servers even for a rank script kiddie is still achievable! … In current security systems you have virtual networks that mimic real networks to trap hackers. Both Linux and Windows Server are able to run such software to protect systems. Individuals unless they have a lot of money will never bother to run such security measures. UEFI attacks require software to effect the UEFI so if such never runs in theory there should not be an issue.
