Fedora 30 and Ubuntu 19.04 have both released back to back pretty much at the same time. Both of these are the biggest distro releases of 2019 yet. So how do they compare against each other? Which among them is the best? Which among them is more suitable for You?

Both these new releases ship with the latest Linux kernel 5 and GNOME 3.3.

Ubuntu 19.04 codenamed Disco Dingo, ships with the latest GNOME 3.32. Ubuntu 19.04 looks really gorgeous with the new wallpaper and the theming. GNOME 3.32 has an improved color scheme with deeper color saturation. Ubuntu now looks much more vibrant.

Ubuntu’s new Yaru theme has matured a lot and more and more apps look uniform with the desktop theme.

The window borders have a premium look with soft curves and natural shadow improvements. Ubuntu looks really good with attention given to finer details and an overall high-quality interface.

The animations and effects are really smooth with a touch of swiftness to them.

The default wallpapers look as though they are made for Ubuntu 19.04. They suit the desktop color theme really well. All the entries here are of superior quality.

All in all, I’m really pleased with the way Ubuntu 19.04 looks.

Fedora 30, comes with the stock GNOME desktop without any customizations. It provides the purest gnome experience. It also means that You can customize the desktop according to your style. On Fedora, You can truly own your desktop.

GNOME by default has improved the color and icons. This brings a modern touch to GNOME. Also, some transparency dynamics have changed in Fedora 30 compared to the last iteration.

The effects give a feel of responsiveness to the desktop. In my opinion, Stock gnome always looks good on the eye. But it doen’t even come with the essential things like the minimize and the maximize button. I understand the scope for flexibility and user customization here but come on, everybody uses those two buttons.

Now side by side, Ubuntu and Fedora look very different from each other. Beauty is a rather subjective issue so both Fedora 30 and Ubuntu 19.04 get a point each for the user interface.

Ubuntu 19.04 duel boot with Windows 10.
Easy and good for content creation and gaming.
I like other distros but nothing works as well for what I use.

Ubuntu being "slightly lenient" about software licence is a very kind euphemism! Canonical's interpretation of the law on intellectual property has been characterized as shifty and plain incorrect, they are consistently obfuscating the free/bound nature of the installed software, and using proprietary code that is repeatedly hosting suspicious and hidden functionalities (trojan and violation of privacy are the words that spring to mind). I wouldn't include this distro in reviews since that could mislead people who are unaware of such issues. It's a bit like comparing cigarette and sport as two ways of relieving stress, you just don't do that.

i'm actually really divided between 3 OSes, Windows (what i'm right now -[actually just to use yumi and make a 18.04 bootable XDD]-), ubuntu 19.10 (installed yesterday [what is doing the job]) and fedora, what i'm using for around 6 months at least and man… this one catched me on first seconds.

Windows- well… nothing to say here, windows, stutters every where, HD get red hot… things what problably we all know…

Ubuntu- my first contact with ubuntu was in what… ubuntu 10 -12 ? wasn't that "good", on that time ubuntu was not my place, since i want just play games… THAN, nowadays, i'm having a damn headache with Xorg on my 5548, does not have driver support of graphics card (a forgotten R7 290-295), everything was a fountain of errors and crashes…
EDIT: (R7 260-265)

Fedora- oooh, that one! here is where i jump with everything on linux world… probabbly not the best OS for first linux contact, but that is it! simple, pure, absolutely non-practical… that is my place!

and today- well i recently knew what makes me love fedora was something called "wayland", where i can use my brightness buttons as they're supposed to be used… and does not gimme an error in "vgaswitcheroo" or "xorg" at every 5 minutes…

i'll give a try to ubuntu again, now the only problem is the damn saturated colors, they look REALLY GOOD only in the first 4 seconds… than become very stressfull.

PPA equivalent in Fedora is Copr repos… And you don't need to keep adding repos to fedora usually, it's repo always have the latest versions of packages, and open source softwares are generally included in fedora repos.

There really is no "better" distro…..you use what you feel most "comfortable" with. I have used Ubuntu…and use it at work….but at home?…I use Fedora, as I prefer their "vanilla" version of Gnome…whereas Ubuntu alters it a bit to make things prettier for users. Also there's things like Linux Mint, which appeals a lot to former Windows users, and….XFCE for those who just want their machine to work minus a lot of widgets, gadgets and what not. So this is kind of like comparing apples to oranges since there's no real distro that is "better" for anyone unless its the distro THEY feel suits their needs.

I stopped upgrading fedora every time…only once in 6 months…because today you really dont need those new packages and features, unless its a kernel tweak that gives you an extra hour battery life.

All in all in 2019 linux is becoming like FreeBSD in terms of usability. You really dont need to upgrade(unless its new stuff) and thats a very very good thing…..

Fedora 30 nvidia driver install isn't tedious and complicated at all. Easy way:- Software Store > Top right "hamburger" > Software repositories > Enable RPMFusion for Fedora 30 – Non free -NVIDIA Driver. Job done.

Please keep an eye on Intel's Crystal. Why? Because they've a lot of money and employ organized teams,‌ open source, stateless easy move, optimized for their chips and coming graphics cards. I don't like corporates in Linux but I think by 2021 Crystal will be huge. So needs watching from now when it's still not ready.

so does Ubuntu work these days like Fedora – a rolling release? that's one major factor for me, having to install a distro for someone else and leave it "maintain" itself pretty much by installing always the latest system.

There is some slight misinformation here.

Installing nonfree drivers on Fedora 30 is not challenging at all. Enable the third party repository which Software Center prompts you to do, then pop up a terminal, sudo dnf install nvidia-kmod

However, there is a GUI way. Trot on to rpmfusion.org. Follow all the simple instructions including those to install/enable appstream meta data and the Nvidia drivers will be installable in the Software Centre under Drivers.

Fedora is not for beginners. For the intermediate user who loves Gnome however, it can be a paradise. Literally my only gripe is TimeShift not working with it.
