Russia’s regions need to boost their medical capabilities and fight for “every person” amid the COVID-19 pandemic, President Vladimir Putin told regional governors via video conference, speaking in Novo-Ogaryovo near Moscow on Wednesday.
The Russian leader said that in the near future the regions will be allocated 10 billion roubles (€122m, $133m) for additional payments to doctors and medical staff.
He emphasised that the economy, as well as the work of the nation’s most crucial companies, cannot stop even during the coronavirus pandemic.
“We cannot stop the economy. Close transport, cargo and passenger traffic between regions, and limit the work of enterprises on a massive scale, regardless of the real situation, even when there are isolated cases of infection in the region. You and I must understand what kind of damage, what destructive consequences it can cause,” said Putin.
“Our country has been through serious trials more than once: Pechenegs tormented us, Polovtsians – Russia coped with everything. We’ll win this coronavirus disease too. Together we will overcome everything,” he concluded.
On Wednesday, Russia recorded 1,175 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total count in the country to 8,672. There have been 63 coronavirus-related deaths in Russia so far.
